Northpoint Training Center History

Northpoint's history is unusually local and specific. The property was used by the Army from 1941 to 1946 as Darnel Hospital, with capacity to house about 880 ill soldiers and German prisoners of war. It returned to Kentucky control in 1946 for $1. From 1946 to 1977, the site operated as Kentucky State Hospital. From July 1977 through February 1983, it served as Danville Youth Development Center.

DOC received control in January 1983 over 551 acres and about 50 structures. Northpoint opened under DOC in 1983 as a minimum-security prison for fewer than 500 inmates and later became a medium-security institution.
